I love HP. My LCD is from HP, my printer is from HP, etc. Something I'm not, though, is biased. Even though I prefer to buy HP products, I know a bad deal when I see one. And this, my friends, is a good deal.

First of all, don't expect the computer to run like a desktop. Laptop components are steered more towards energy efficiency then performance. I'm not saying the machine is slow, just not as fast as a desktop with similar "qualities". That said, on to the review:

The design of this laptop is slick. Not too crazy, not too lamey, but right... in... the middle. Bronze definitely does not get enough credit.

I love the screen on this thing. It's the perfect size (at least for me); not too big [and heavy], and not too small. Also (and when compared to other laptops), it's pretty bright. If you're not used to using wide screen displays, the screen configuration will feel weird at first, but you'll get over it soon.

I can see a lot of people having trouble with the keyboard. While it's quite clear in a well illuminated area, Without a significant light source, it becomes hard to read. I kid you not, you will be squirming and bending over tying to get in an angle where you can see the keys.

The machine comes with a built in camera and microphone, which is quite nice; the camera especially has higher quality then most webcams you can buy in stores, and HP software makes it fun and easy to add some effects to photos, though you're going to want a more powerful image processor for greater versatility and options.

The control it brings is nifty, but since the laptop does not come with a T.V. Tuner, you'll find little use for it aside from watching movies and listening to music.

HP SmartBay let's you remove the DVD-ROM [with LightScribe!] in order to reduce weight. I find the difference insignificant.

You may want to increase the weight by adding a battery with more cells, though, the battery can last a long time if you're not doing anything pressing, but gaming (or rendering complex media) will drain the battery in a couple of hours.

As far as performance goes, the Laptop plays the Sims 3 faster then any machine I've tried it on, so kudos. I had my doubts about the integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD, and it could play more smoothly, but overall performance is not a problem. This Laptop delivers.

An important note: this laptop comes with an N-WLAN card, which is awesome. N cards are faster then normal WLAN cards, and also work from further away.

I plan to switch to XP nonetheless, but so far so good. Sometimes I think my laptop hates Vista as much as I do, but that just makes me love it more.

Windows Vista comes with Service Pack 1, and it's 64-bit edition, which is necessary for running those 4 GB of RAM. The 320 GB HD, is kickin'!

I have had no problems with this machine, HP delivers again with it's trustworthy Pavilion line of computers. Just make sure you have a light on.

I ended up bought the same item from Frys and I have been very satisfied with it so far. It's fast and quiet.

I'd like to share my ordeal with Amazon.com and maybe I can get some advices. I bought this item directly from Amazon store (not a affiliate store) and received a wrong item. Inside the correct HP box, I found an old Dell desktop without a mouse or keyboard. I returned the wrong item with Amazon-issued shipping label.

A week later I got an email from Amazon stating the I returned a wrong item. I called them twice to explain that they sent me a wrong item to begin with. On the 3rd email Amazon basically denied that they sent a wrong item and they are not going to change their mind. They're sending the wrong item back to me. I filed a complaint through BBB and Amazon replied the same thing. I filed another complaint through FTC.

This has been a nightmare experience to me. I think somebody stole the HP computer and put in a worthless old computer in Amazon or HP warehouse. Now they might think that I'm trying to scam them. That would be an insult. [...]

Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK 1080p Upconverting VHS DVD Recorder with Built In Tuner

I bought this unit because I frequently view both VHS tapes and rental DVDs. I do not use many of the other available features such as SD card or USB. The unit works reasonably well, but there are several design features that I find annoying, and I would have paid more (or less) to avoid them, had I known about them in advance:
1. The unit takes about 37 seconds to turn on, and about 15 seconds to turn off. Since I'm hooked up by satellite box to the TV via the unit, this means it takes the better part of a minute for me to get a picture when I "turn on" the TV. I don't like to leave the unit on all the time to avoid this problem, because it also produces a soft audible humming I find annoying when I do so.
2. The unit turns itself off at unpredictable intervals of several hours, which must be some kind of bug. It happens perhaps once every other day. It's annoying in the middle of a show, especially because it takes more than a minute to cycle all the way back on.
3. There is no dedicated button to switch from DVD to VCR. Instead, the remote controller has a "drive select" button, and to switch between modes, you must cycle slowly through all 4 options, waiting a couple of seconds for each switch - it doesn't remember how many pushes you've made, either, so you must actually watch the screen and wait for each mode change in sequence. I never use USB or SD modes, and switch frequently between VHS and DVD, so this is quite annoying.
4. The unit's default is DVD mode, so if you are watching a VHS after a break, you have to wait not only the 37 seconds for the unit to start, but then also slowly press the mode 3 times to return to VHS. I'd much prefer the unit remembered the last mode used, or came with dedicated mode buttons.
5. There is only 2x zoom available, and no ability to move about on the zoomed screen, quite inferior to the options I had with my prior Toshiba unit. Plus, the Toshiba unit had a simple button to toggle between standard view, 2x and 4x modes, and you could then also scroll around the magnified screen using the arrows. Using the inferior 2x-only zoom without scroll option on the Panasonic unit is paradoxically cumbersome and inconvenient: Press the "sub-menu" button; press the "down" arrow twice to select "zoom in"; and press the "OK" button. You have to go through all 3 steps to "un-zoom", again.
In summary, while the performance of the unit is adequate, the controls are rather poorly and clumsily designed, for the the way I use it, and I would not recommend it to a friend.

The 60 Min. provided with this Panasonic DVD-RAM is great, but trying to find a DVD player which will play back DVD-RAM is a nusience.

I purchased this DVD-RAM in error and now I find myself having to use my DVD Camcorder to play anything back. If your looking for something 60 Min. which can be re-recorded the 60 Min. DVD-RW is the safest bet. Many DVD players will read DVD-R/RW, so you can pop the little thing right in and have it play back on your TV. No fiddling with AV cables.

I can't hate on the DVD-RAM too bad because it was my mistake, but be warned!

I thought I was getting a double layer disk. But it allows recording on both sides for twice the storage. I wanted it for my Panasonic DVR to record in XP mode which limits a disk to 1 hour. I thought 2 hours would be great. It can do that, but the disk in its own holder has to be flipped to continue, making you lose recording of program in the process. And I didn't know that the bay for disks is designed to accept the thick holder of this disk, which is great as it avoids you touching the surface. So, I was disappointed, but happy I have one of these, which should work as wonderful as the single sided ones in recording near DVD quality of HD shows.

I bought these only because Panasonic said they were the only way to record a digital TV program. They were right, it recorded the programs just fine with no problems.

But....DVD-RAM can only be played on Panasonic or Samsung. They cannot be finalized so other players can read them. This makes very difficult unless you have two Panasonics in the house. Although it is better then not being able to record a digital broadcast at all, it is not the best solution. Someone needs to come up with the technology to record the digital programs on DVD-R/RW.

Panasonic makes a great product that accomplishes what it is designed to do. Although cost per DVD is high, they can be reused for over a 1000 recordings making them worth the cost.

I just packed up my pink Sony Vaio laptop for return. I received the computer 2 weeks ago and had several issues. First, almost every time I unplugged the computer to run on battery, the function key stopped working; therefore, not allowing me to adjust the volume or screen brightness. My screen went black for no reason a couple times and wouldn't come back on unless I powered the computer down. Finally, and I don't know if this is a Vista problem or Sony, every time my computer would go into sleep mode, upon awakening, it would disconnect from the wireless internet and also kick the rest of my family's computers off as well. I spoke to customer service about returning the computer since it was within the 30 day warranty period and found out that my warranty started the day I ordered it, even though I received it 2 weeks later! It would take them 2 days, not including the weekend, so 4 full days to give me the shipping number that is required to be on the package for return. Don't buy this product. Once you get it, they will be difficult to deal with and try to make it impossible to return. Imagine what kind of service you get after the 30 days are up and you're really stuck with the computer!

I am very satisfied with this item which was refurbished by Panasonic. It is as good as new and is relatively simple to program for my needs, although there are many other features that are available but which I do not need to use at this time like playing MP3s,JPEG,DivX, etc.

I bought this item because I do not have cable or satellite service and receive the new digital TV transmissions on-the-air with ordinary rabbit ears costing about $12. I am fortunate that my house is in plain view of the Sutro TV tower in San Francisco so my reception is perfect.

I use it primarily to record TV programs that are broadcasted while I am away from home and which I do not want to miss. I use DVD+RW discs which allow me to delete and reuse after viewing.

I am also transferring my old VHS travel tapes, etc. to DVD discs for posterity, and for these I use ordinary DVD+R discs which do not permit adding new material to them. They are one-time recordings for my own use or for making copies for friends, etc.

As I said above, I am very happy with this product and would highly recommend it to anyone with the same needs.
